The U.S. de minimis rule (Section 321 exemption) applies to goods imported into the U.S. from abroad, including the EU:
Threshold: Goods valued at $800 USD or less per shipment can enter the U.S. duty-free and tax-free.
Applies to: Most consumer goods purchased online and shipped directly to the buyer.
Exclusions: Certain goods are not eligible (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, some controlled items).
Per shipment basis: The $800 applies per shipment per day, not per item. If the order value exceeds $800, normal duties and taxes apply to the whole shipment.
Customs: Even when exempt from duties, packages may still be subject to inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
👉 In short: If you order online from the EU to the U.S. and the total shipment is ≤ $800, you don’t pay customs duties or taxes under the de minimis rule. Above that, duties apply.
